Report Day 2

Doon CC 2014

Report Day 2

The coursing on the second day was delayed for 2 hours with fog. The club decided to run the meeting and the decision was correct. All 1/4 and 1\2 finals of the Oaks / Derby and Cup were run off in clockwork precision. The opening quarter fina of the Oaks trial stake was a cracker. Skellig Starwars seemed to take an advantage from slips but it wasnt until they came out of the wire (fog was terrible) that we could see 2 bitches locked together. Coming up the field it looked like Skellig was just ahead but as the neared the hare, Boshski showed great battling qualities to shoot up and get the flag. A very tight call but being in line with the turn, the decision was correct. The next course was a bye for Toem polly who looked well going up. In the 3rd quarter final, Bonarea Jenny looked infront after the run up and gradually increased it to a length and a half for the flag. Both bitches then got a bit of quick turns before the hare made it safely home. Missouri Duchess and Same Over pixie were locked together when we could see them but just as the white collar seemed to be forging ahead she lost sight of her quarry leaving Missouri to take the flag to progress to the semi final. In the semi final we had 3 sisters and Boshski competing. This was a great achievment from the Johnny Casanova Ballymore Polly litter.
The first semi final was another exciting course. Again the fog played havoc for theobservers as it wasnt until after the wire that the bitches came into view. At this stage Boshski had posed a length lead and she then gradually increased it to 1 1/2 length at the turn. The next semi final was between the 2 sisters, Bonarea Jenny and Missouri Duchess. Bonarea Jenny seemed to get the better break and was a half length clear but with 100 yards to the turn, Missouri seemed to stray off a straigth line leaving Bonarea to get the flag. The final was over in a matter of strides as Bonarea missed the brak , crossed sides and Boshski bombed away for another TS success for Michael O Donovan. Boshski owned by the Dilger family showed great battling qualities in the stake and it seemed that she will appreciate an even greater test. The runne rup looked very tired in the final with the 3 quick runs getting to her but lost nothing in defeat and connections will fancy her chances when she reappears. The TS was very hot and i think 5/6 bitches all have chances of picking up the Golden Ticket. Bonarea Jenny, Toem Polly, Missouri Duchess, Breaska Lantern (beat 2 lengths by winner in 2nd) Fenora Ocean and same over pixie will all have a say in the next OTS the run in. Hopefully Boshski will strike it rich in Clonmel.

Reserve Derby Trial Stake

The reserve derby trial stake saw the raging hot favourite overturned in the decider. In the 1\4 finals Ballymac Abraham looked good when eliminating Downtown Geezer by 1 length. Downtown looked to be offline as he changed sides but showed good pace to cut the deficit in the final 100 yards when respotting his quarry. Call up soon looked impressive when accounting for Crafty Totoro. He led by 1 length after the wire and extended it to 2 1/2 lengths at the turn. Magical Harvey who was 4/5 favourite at this early stage then eliminated Killeagh Jack by 4 lengths after showing terrific early pace to open up a gap after the wire. The final course saw Freemount Sire battle back to win by 1 1\2 lengths after looking in trouble after they out of the fog. The first semi final was close when Ballymac Abraham came away in front from the favouring red collar and looked impressive when holding call up soon all the way for the flag and a place in the decider. Magical Harvey looked most impressive in the semi final when bombing out of slips and easily beating Freemount. He got a nice few turn after that course and it really affected him in the final where he looked very sluggish and never showed the same spark that had him 1/3 in the final . Ballymac flew from slips and won the course by 4 lengths over a tired looking Magical. Ballymac has now cemented him place in Powerstwon and will be hoping for a kind draw in the reserves allocation that will be taking place in the next week or so.

The all age cup was won by Ocean Sirocco. He received 2 byes on the final day when Silent rocky was withdrawn in the morning and Aristo Dawn was withdrawn from the final .The opening 1\4 final was a shock when Cooga Darlan looked to lose sight of the hare after the wire and crossed over tho the right. When resighting he showed terrific pace to claw back the deficit but Coolree held his line and was awarded the flag by a half length. Ocean Sirrocco enjoyed his straight bye in the next course. Make peace then looked very impressive when beating recent Ardpatrick winner Killeagh Jingles by 2 lengths but unfortunately for him go a hard course and came off the field lame. It was now a chance for Aristo Dawn and Knockbrakc queen to reach the final as everyone felt that they would have a bye in the semi final .It was Aristo Dawn who won the course comfortably showing good early pace. She then enjoyed a bye in the semi final but the 2 quick runs must have taken their toll as she was withdrawn fom the final. The top semi final saw the outsider Ocean Sirocco 2/1 take advantage straight from flag fall. He continued his advantage all the way to win by  3 lengths and was then declared the winner of the Corn Dun Bleisce.

Considering the weather conditions, coursing went off very well with strong running hares and close buckles throughout the both days. Ritchie Quinn slipped exceptionally as usual and i felt Tony Reddan got every close decision correct. Doon CC would like to thank all the members througout the year and look forward to next year.
