Rathkeale - Limerick Cup

The Limerick Cup is the feature event at Rathkeale Coursing club at the weekend. A strong field has assembled with many fancying their chances of success. The top half seems more competitive and the first round clash between Kerry Abu and Tellmomorelies will be eagerly awaited.
Defacto was the first dog drawn out of the hat. He was a top class puppy but never lived up to his reputation last season as an all age. This 3 rd season runner reappeared in Limerick City losing a first round clash to Essential by 2 lengths. He then went to Nenagh beating Missouri Rock by a length in the first and losing a close buckle with Needham Ashmore in the second. He has been kept busy with another run in Cavan last week but should progress to the second round here as he faces a novice track dog in the first. Bodens Rocket was well fancied last week in Ardpatrick but unfortunately never got to run. He is lightly raced for his age with only 6 outings. A repeat of his semi-final place in Abbeydorney puts him in the picture in this event and is my fancy to reach the last 4. He might get his closest run in the opener as Bridewell Adios is a bit of an unknown quantity. He showed himself to be no slouch in Roscommon last year reaching the semi-final but has a long absence to overcome. As previously mentioned Kerry Abu and Tellmemorelies should be a course to savour. Abu opened his all age campaign with a gutsy win in Kilflynn but 2 outings since has yielded little success. He reached the quarter final in Listowel but his clock was a long way off the principles. The field in Rathkeale should suit and his early pace may be needed against tellmemorelies. This dog has a clear liking for a galloping stretch and showed his wellbeing in Ballyheigue with a narrow loss to Drive on Smokey in the quarter final. He ran in Ballyduff last week losing to the very impressive Kyle Mozart in the second round. He is sure to have his supporters and looks likely to meet Bodens Rocket in the semi-final. Almighty Man looks could come out best in the last course of the first half but will need a personal best to beat Kerry Abu or Tellmemorelies.

The second half looks less competitive with only one dog having a career victory to his name. Cooga Hero is a 3 rd season dog but similar to Bodens Rocket, has little running done. He looked very useful as a puppy and highlighted his ability in Thurles with a comprehensive victory of the O Meara cup last year. He ran once this year in Regional, clocking up with Jet Stream in the opening round before narrowly losing a terrific buckle with Turbo Ashmore in the quarter final after leading for most of the journey. He will be fancied to win his opening round but could face stiff opposition from Southern Spring in the second. This dog didn’t show much as a puppy last year but connections must have been confident of his ability to keep him and were repaid in Charleville when beaten in the All age final. He improved his clock throughout and is clearly a dog on the upgrade. Cooga might prove a different proposition here though. At the top of the first half Seamus Alainn looks the one they all have to beat. After a disappointing all age campaign last year, he came back to form this season with impressive runs in Glin and Limerick City. He lost narrowly on both occasions and on form, will surely be too strong for the other 3 competitors in this quarter. He gets a confident vote to progress to the semi-final where Cooga Hero or Southern Spring could lie in wait.

Overall it seems the first round buckle between Kerry Abu and Tellmemorelies will have a major bearing on the outcome. Seamus Alainn or Cooga Hero look the pick in the bottom. Tellmemorelies just gets the nod. Best of luck to all runners.
