Walsh Cup – Kilkenny
With the busy xmas period nearly upon us, this weekends action takes place in both East Donegal and Kilkenny. The walsh cup is a prestigious event and has attracted a good quality field. The most interesting and unusual runner in the field is Light Duty. A dog who hails from the north and won at the previous East Donegal meeting, owners have turned down the chance to win in athe same field to make the long trek down south to contest the Walsh cup. Although an unusual move, his journey may be worthwhile come Sunday evening. Light duty was heavily backed on the final day of Clonmel last year but lost out in the semi final .After that he was entered in a puppy stake in the Irish cup meeting where his exertions in Clonmel seemed to get the better of him. This year he romped to victory in East Donegal and he heads the betting (2/1) here to claim his second cup of the meeting. The opening round should see Barefoot Magnus advance. A fast dog that has had problems, he should advance to the semi final where I feel he will have too much for Cuban Ando in round 2. Tynwald ash is an interesting runner. He showed glimpses of being a surefire TS winner last year but received a bad injury in Abbeydorney and never ran with the same venom after. If back to his best I think Light duty will have it all to do to advance. On form however it is impossible to look beyond Duty to reach the final.
Tilford Tom is the standout dog in the bottom half. An impressive puppy who won the Corn na Feile and ran well with distinction in the Derby. The following year he looked nail on to contest the Champion stakes after winning the cup in Listowel but was injured in Newcastlewest and one feels he wasn’t right for the Irish Cup meeting. He ran with credit this year and I feel connections may have had this 3 rd season dog out a bit soon after winning a 16 runner all age in Castleisland. His exertions there seemed to take its toll in the final as Needham Danger won comfortably. He should win his first round and get the better of father flash in the quarter final. Glenlough Mick looks the obvious winner of the bottom quarter but I feel the winner of the needham gadget and inch hothead will give him a good run. However come semi-
